Visits: 0

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a consultant to develop standard operating procedures and review dairy infrastructure equipment for the PRDAIGL project, Burundi.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org

Background:

The Regional Integrated Agricultural Development Project in the Great Lakes (PRDAIGL) is at the heart of the agricultural economy of Burundian households and reflects Burundi’s long-term vision to reduce poverty and stimulate economic growth. By facilitating a transformation of Burundian agriculture, the project should have significant multiplier effects: generate demand for agricultural products and associated inputs and services, create agricultural and non-agricultural jobs, improve incomes and contribute to value addition, sector revenues. These effects should: (i) promote the inclusion of largely poor smallholders in more modern and efficient value chains; (ii) increase food and nutritional security; (iii) add value to important products and help increase farmers’ incomes; and (iv) provide an effective basis for industrialization and for more and better jobs (especially for women and youth). In the medium and long term, an efficient, profitable and competitive agricultural sector will emerge, providing inputs and services to smallholder farmers and mobilizing sufficient investments for its sustainable development.

Given the above context, dairy cattle surgical equipment will be provided to veterinarians, accompanied by training to perform routine surgical procedures including: correction of abomasal displacement, dehorning, tail docking, caesarean delivery, hernia repair, reduction of vaginal and rectal prolapse, rumenotomy, fracture reduction, puncture aspiration of the abscess, hoof trimming and teat laceration repairs. These skills will be used by field veterinarians to assist dairy producers to fix clinical conditions requiring surgery including eye cancers, left displaced abomasum (where the abomasum ends up on the wrong side of the cow’s abdomen) and pregnancy complications

Scope of Work:

The consultant is to develop training manuals and materials which are intended to be used on the ILRI PRDAIGL project, providing step by step knowledge of routine surgical procedures for dairy animals (including instrumentation, asepsis, sutures and suturing, preoperative assessment, restraint, sedations, analgesia, anaesthesia, fluid therapy, wound treatment, common surgery techniques applied on head, neck, abdomen, urogenital apparatus, teat and lameness of dairy cattle).

The materials should cover the most common and most critical procedures based on Eastern and Central African dairy cattle breeds, environment, and consultant experience. It is anticipated that training material of routine surgical procedures in dairy cattle will be used as reference material beyond Burundi in countries with similar conditions by extension staff, scientists and other dairy value chain actors. The materials shall also be converted to a hybrid classroom and field presentation.

Upon acceptance of the manuals and presentation, the consultant will lead three (3) training sessions for 10 veterinarians at each session. Each session will last one week and must be delivered in French. Upon conclusion a final training report will be required with certificates for those completing the course.

Final products:

The consultant will deliver:

  • Completed French-language manual with illustrations for routine surgical procedures on dairy animals in Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF, using ILRI formatting guidelines.
  • Presentation materials in French for a one-week training course with classroom and field instruction.
  • Three (3) one-week training sessions for an estimated 10 veterinarians at each session.
  • Interim and final training reports using ILRI formatting guidelines.
  • Signed certificates for all attendees as record of their training.
